THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT VIEWS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Tony Blair pledged on the 14th September 2004 to lead the world in the global fight against climate change. Since coming to power seven years ago, what has he done to help the environment?

Britain is seeking more energy from renewable resources that do not produce carbon dioxide – wind, wave and solar power. Only 2.7 per cent of UK electricity comes from renewable energy. There is now a firm target to make 10 per cent of UK energy by 2010 and 20 per cent by 2020.

Some critics say the government is not doing nearly enough to promote the alternative sources of renewable energy and that British efforts to develop solar, wave and tidal power are negligible.

The Prime Minister’s government means well but must do a lot more than place all its hopes on wind power.
